The 270 kilometers distance from Lijiang to the Lugu Lake demands almost a full day's driving along mountainous and winding road. The lake straddles the Yunnan-Sichuan border, is approximately 8 kilometers across and is dotted with five small islands. It is elevated 2,685 meters above sea level, highest in the province and second deepest (90 meters) in China. Residing in and around the lake is Mosuo, a tribe of the Naxi who still practice matriarchal marriages even today.
